Working on a roof is dangerous. While applying roof coating, certain safety guidelines should be followed. Being aware of any hazards on the roof is important. Also dressing for the weather is key. Roofs can become hot in the summer so dress in cool clothing and keep hydrated. Before applying the coating, any repairs, such as removing loose screws and repairing cracks, should be done. Coating is difficult to remove, so clean any spilled coating from clothing and tools immediately.
Roofing Temperature ConsiderationsRoofs are subject to a wide range of temperature conditions, from extreme heat in the summer to subfreezing temperatures in the winter. The roofs coating must be stored in the can near room temperature to keep it suitable for application. The surfaces the coatings are applied to should be free of ice and, for most solutions, dry. The product should ideally be applied in the afternoon on a sunny day. The ideal temperature for applying roof coatings is around 70 degrees. Some products are designed to cure at much colder temperatures. Roof Coatings – PrimersFollowing on from our last roofing article we continue to focus on Roof Coating and this week talk about Primers. Using a primer under the roof coating is recommended. The type of primer used is different depending on the location of the roof and the type of roof coating. A primer helps the coating stick to the surface. Before putting on the primer, the roof membrane surface must be prepared by making sure it’s clean. Asphalt roofs require asphalt primer. The asphalt primer should not be used with other types of coatings. Metal, concrete and acrylic roofsalso require a primer, while cool tar roofs do not need a primer before applying coating. The coating should be applied shortly after the primer dries.
